[ARCHIVED] Possible Future Interruptions of Electric Service

Rusty sign that says Power outage

GRDA is preparing for the possibility later this evening of returning to an Energy Emergency Alert (EEA) Level 3, and the potential for future interruptions of service.

Currently, we are requesting all members conserve energy. Some conservation recommendations for customers are as follows:

  • Turn down thermostats to 68 degrees.
  • Close shades and blinds to reduce the amount of heat lost through windows.
  • Turn off and unplug non‐essential lights and appliances. Avoid using large appliances.
  • Businesses should minimize the use of electric lighting and electricity‐consuming equipment.

The bottom line is conservation of energy right now is the key. If someone has the option to not use it, they should exercise that option now while it is voluntary.

Should further interruptions of service be required, GRDA will notify electric providers (including City of Siloam  Springs Electric Department). When we (GRDA) receive notice from Southwestern Power Pool (SPP) our system operations desk has approximately 5 minutes to make determinations about which GRDA delivery points will be interrupted. This can vary greatly depending on the size of load GRDA is being requested to shed. However, we will provide as much notice as we are able, particularly for subsequent communities in the rotation.

It is important to note that an EEA 3 is not in effect, nor is it necessarily being predicted by SPP, but as we move later into the day we know that the SPP evening peak will occur at approximately 10:00 p.m. and are preparing for the potential orders from SPP around that time. The communities of Miami, Wagoner and Skiatook have already experienced power interruptions.
